In my eyes, the most important rule in life is the " golden" rule. "Treat others the way you want to be treated." This rule sets guidelines for living harmoniously with others.
This rule is based around empathy, or the idea of thinking about, or trying to feel what others feel because of somebody's actions. If someone were to steal money from somebody else, then it paints a picture that tells somebody that this person wants this to happen to themselves. On the other hand, if a person helps an senior citizen cross a street, it would show that this person cares for other people, and would like the same kind of treatment.
This rule, "Do unto others as one would do unto themselves", will remind us that by treating other people with compassion and friendship, others will take our actions to heart, and in turn, treat you with dignity and respect.
